"Last Voyage of the Yamato" commemorates Operation Ten-Go, the final mission of the Japanese battleship Yamato. Launched in April 1945, Yamato sailed on what was effectively a one-way mission toward Okinawa as Japanese leaders sought to slow the advancing Allied forces.

The Yamato was the largest battleship ever constructed, displacing more than 70,000 tons and carrying the largest naval guns ever mounted aboard a warship. Despite its immense size and firepower, the battleship was vulnerable to modern carrier-based air power.

On April 7, 1945, waves of American carrier aircraft attacked the Yamato and its escorts in the East China Sea. After sustaining numerous bomb and torpedo hits, the battleship exploded and sank, marking one of the most dramatic moments in naval history and symbolizing the end of the battleship era.
