About Pete Knight

William J. "Pete" Knight (1929-2004) was a legendary United States Air Force test pilot, aerospace pioneer, and one of the most accomplished aviators of the Space Age. Knight is best known for his groundbreaking flights in the North American X-15, the rocket-powered research aircraft that helped pave the way for future spaceflight programs.

On October 3, 1967, Knight set a world speed record by flying the X-15 to Mach 6.72, approximately 4,520 miles per hour, a record that remains one of the most remarkable achievements in aviation history. His work in the X-15 program contributed significantly to the advancement of high-speed flight, aerospace engineering, and manned space exploration.

Throughout his distinguished career, Knight served as a test pilot, military aviator, and aerospace leader, helping expand the boundaries of human flight during one of the most exciting periods in aviation history.
