Colonel Steve Pisanos lived one of the most extraordinary stories in American military aviation history.

Born in Greece, Pisanos traveled to the United States as a young man before volunteering to fight against Nazi Germany. Prior to America's entry into World War II, he flew with the Royal Air Force before transferring to the United States Army Air Forces after becoming an American citizen.

While stationed in London, England, Pisanos was sworn in as a United States citizen on May 3, 1943, making him one of the very few servicemen to become a U.S. citizen while serving overseas during wartime.

Flying the legendary P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang, Pisanos was officially credited with 10 aerial victories, earning recognition as an American double ace.

Following the war, he continued his distinguished military career in the United States Air Force, serving as a fighter pilot and test pilot during the early jet age.
