About Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa

Captain Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa (1919-2013) was one of the most accomplished naval aviators of World War II and a highly decorated combat pilot of the United States Navy. During combat operations in the Pacific Theater, Vejtasa distinguished himself through exceptional aerial combat achievements while flying multiple aircraft types.

Vejtasa became famous for his extraordinary success while flying the Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber, an aircraft not typically associated with air-to-air combat victories. In one remarkable engagement during the Battle of the Coral Sea, he shot down multiple Japanese aircraft despite flying a dive bomber against enemy fighters.

Later transitioning to fighter aircraft, including the F4F Wildcat, Vejtasa continued his combat success and established himself as one of the most versatile naval aviators of the war. His unique accomplishments earned him a lasting place in United States Navy aviation history.
