About Saburo Sakai

Saburo Sakai (1916-2000) was one of Japan's most celebrated fighter pilots and one of the leading aces of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service during World War II. Flying the legendary Mitsubishi A6M Zero, Sakai became renowned for his exceptional flying skill, courage, and combat achievements throughout the Pacific Theater.

Credited with more than 60 aerial victories during the war, Sakai earned a reputation as one of the most formidable fighter pilots of his generation. He is perhaps best known for surviving a devastating combat wound in 1942 and successfully flying his damaged aircraft hundreds of miles back to base despite severe injuries.

Following the war, Sakai became an advocate for peace and reconciliation and gained international recognition through his memoir "Samurai!", one of the most widely read fighter pilot accounts of World War II.
