About Saburo Sakai

Saburo Sakai (1916-2000) was one of the most respected fighter pilots of World War II and is widely regarded as Japan's most famous surviving ace.

Serving with the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service, Sakai flew combat throughout the Pacific and China theaters and became one of Japan's highest-scoring fighter pilots. Flying the legendary Mitsubishi A6M Zero, he earned a reputation for exceptional flying skill, discipline, and determination.

Sakai survived one of the most remarkable incidents of the war when he suffered a severe head wound during combat in 1942. Despite being partially blinded and seriously injured, he successfully flew his damaged aircraft hundreds of miles back to base, an achievement that became legendary among aviation historians.

Following the war, Sakai became an advocate for reconciliation and friendship between former enemies. His autobiography, "Samurai!", remains one of the most widely read fighter pilot memoirs ever published and introduced his story to generations of aviation enthusiasts around the world.
