About Robert Crippen

Robert L. Crippen is a former United States Navy officer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut best known for serving as the pilot of STS-1, the first Space Shuttle mission in history. On April 12, 1981, Crippen joined Commander John Young aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, launching the Space Shuttle era and ushering in a new chapter of human spaceflight.

Crippen flew four Space Shuttle missions during his NASA career and later held numerous leadership positions within the agency. His role on STS-1 remains one of the most significant achievements of the Space Shuttle Program and modern aerospace history.
