About Paul W. Tibbets Jr.

Brigadier General Paul W. Tibbets Jr. (1915-2007) was one of the most consequential military aviators in history and is best known as the commander and pilot of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay during World War II.

On August 6, 1945, Tibbets piloted the Enola Gay on the mission that delivered the first atomic bomb used in warfare over Hiroshima, Japan. The mission remains one of the most significant and widely studied events in military and world history.

Prior to this assignment, Tibbets established a reputation as one of the U.S. Army Air Forces' most skilled bomber pilots and leaders. Following World War II, he continued his military career and played an important role in the development of postwar strategic air power.
