About Pappy Boyington

Colonel Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was one of the most celebrated Marine aviators of World War II.

Before joining the United States Marine Corps, Boyington flew combat missions with the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers) in China. Later, as commander of VMF-214 "Black Sheep Squadron," he led one of the most famous fighter squadrons of the Pacific Theater.

Boyington was officially credited with 28 aerial victories, making him one of the highest-scoring Marine fighter aces of World War II. After being shot down over Rabaul in 1944, he spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war before returning home following Japan's surrender. He was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism.

His remarkable wartime career later inspired the popular television series "Baa Baa Black Sheep."
