About Jimmy Doolittle

General James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle (1896-1993) was one of the most influential aviators in American history. A pioneering pilot, aviation engineer, military leader, and recipient of the Medal of Honor, Doolittle helped shape both military and civilian aviation during the twentieth century.

Doolittle is best remembered for leading the historic Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942, the first American air attack against the Japanese home islands following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Flying B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, Doolittle and his crews carried out one of the most daring missions of World War II. The raid provided a critical morale boost to the United States and demonstrated American resolve during the early months of the war.

Beyond the Doolittle Raid, he made groundbreaking contributions to aviation technology, instrument flying, and military leadership.
