About James H. Howard

Brigadier General James H. Howard (1913-1995) was a distinguished American fighter pilot, Medal of Honor recipient, and combat ace who served with both the Flying Tigers and the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.

Howard earned the nation's highest military decoration for valor on January 11, 1944, while flying a P-51 Mustang escort mission over Germany. During a fierce aerial battle, Howard single-handedly defended a formation of American bombers against repeated attacks by enemy fighters, displaying extraordinary courage and determination despite overwhelming odds.

His heroic actions earned him the Medal of Honor, making him the only fighter pilot in the European Theater of Operations to receive the award during World War II. Today, James H.
