About Herschel Green

Colonel Herschel H. Green (1920-2009) was one of the leading American fighter aces of World War II. Flying combat missions in the European Theater, Green was credited with 18.5 aerial victories, placing him among the highest-scoring American aces of the war.

Assigned to the famed 317th Fighter Squadron, 325th Fighter Group, Green flew both the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt and later the legendary North American P-51 Mustang. His combat record included victories against some of Germany's finest fighter aircraft during intense aerial battles over occupied Europe.

Green's courage, flying skill, and aggressive combat leadership earned him numerous decorations, including the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest award for valor in combat. His accomplishments made him one of the most respected fighter pilots of his generation.
