About Harold R. Harris

Major General Harold R. Harris (1897-1988) was a pioneering military aviator, test pilot, and aviation leader whose career spanned the formative years of American military aviation. Serving in the United States Army Air Service and later the United States Air Force, Harris helped shape the development of military flight during the twentieth century.

Harris is best remembered for surviving a catastrophic aircraft failure in 1922 when he successfully parachuted from a disabled aircraft over Ohio. The event is widely recognized as one of the first successful emergency parachute escapes by an American military pilot and demonstrated the lifesaving value of parachutes in aviation.

Throughout his distinguished career, Harris contributed to flight testing, military aviation development, and aerospace leadership, becoming one of the most respected aviation figures of his generation.
