About Everett Alvarez

Commander Everett Alvarez Jr. (1937-2024) was a United States Navy aviator who became the first American pilot shot down and captured during the Vietnam War. On August 5, 1964, while flying combat operations from the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, his A-4 Skyhawk was shot down over North Vietnam during retaliatory strikes following the Gulf of Tonkin incident.

Captured immediately after ejecting, Alvarez would spend more than eight and a half years as a prisoner of war, making him one of the longest-held American POWs of the conflict. Despite years of imprisonment and harsh conditions, he demonstrated remarkable courage, leadership, and resilience.

Released during Operation Homecoming in 1973, Alvarez became a symbol of perseverance and service. Following his military career, he continued serving the nation in numerous public and government leadership roles.
