About Burkard von Mullenheim-Rechberg

Burkard Freiherr von Mullenheim-Rechberg (1910-2003) was a German naval officer and the highest-ranking surviving officer from the battleship Bismarck, one of the most famous warships ever built.

Serving as a gunnery officer aboard the Bismarck, von Mullenheim-Rechberg witnessed firsthand the ship's historic Atlantic sortie, including the sinking of HMS Hood and the subsequent pursuit by the Royal Navy. Following the Bismarck's destruction on May 27, 1941, he was among the relatively few survivors rescued from the North Atlantic.

After the war, von Mullenheim-Rechberg became one of the foremost authorities on the Bismarck and authored respected historical accounts of the ship and its crew. His firsthand experiences and historical writings helped preserve the story of one of the most significant naval engagements of World War II.
