About Benjamin O. Davis Jr.

Benjamin O. Davis Jr. (1912-2002) was a pioneering military aviator, commander of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, and one of the most influential leaders in United States Air Force history. A graduate of West Point, Davis overcame significant racial barriers throughout his military career and became the first African American general officer in the United States Air Force.

During World War II, Davis commanded the famed 332nd Fighter Group, whose pilots became known as the Red Tails. Under his leadership, the Tuskegee Airmen earned an exceptional combat record while helping pave the way for the eventual integration of the United States Armed Forces.

Davis continued his distinguished military career after the war, ultimately achieving the rank of Four-Star General. Today, Benjamin O.
