About Colonel Wacław Makowski

Colonel Wacław Makowski (1897-1984) was one of Poland's most influential aviators and a pioneering figure in both military and commercial aviation. His remarkable aviation career spanned nearly five decades and included service during World War I, the struggle for Polish independence, and the development of Poland's aviation infrastructure during the twentieth century.

Born in Russian-occupied Poland, Makowski was inducted into the Russian Army in 1916 and witnessed the turmoil of the Russian Revolution before escaping to his homeland. He subsequently joined the newly organized Polish Army and played a role in the rebirth of an independent Poland following more than a century of foreign rule.

Throughout his distinguished career, Makowski helped establish the Polish Air Force and later became instrumental in the development of LOT Polish Airlines, helping build one of Europe's most respected national carriers. His contributions to military aviation, commercial flight, and aviation leadership earned him recognition as one of Poland's most important aviation pioneers.
