About Richard E. Cole

Lieutenant Colonel Richard E. Cole served as the co-pilot to Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle aboard Aircraft No. 1 during the legendary Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942.

Launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, the sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers carried out the first American air attack against the Japanese home islands following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The daring mission provided a tremendous boost to Allied morale and demonstrated that Japan itself was vulnerable to American air power.

As Doolittle's trusted co-pilot, Cole played a vital role in one of the most celebrated missions in military aviation history. He was the last surviving Doolittle Raider, dedicating much of his later life to preserving the legacy of the mission and honoring the men who participated.

Today, authentic Richard E. Cole autographs remain among the most sought-after signatures in World War II aviation collecting.

Historical Significance

The Doolittle Raid remains one of the most iconic operations of World War II.

Richard Cole's inscription, "Tokyo Bound, 4-18-42," directly references the historic mission that changed the course of the Pacific War and became a lasting symbol of American courage and determination.

Authentic inscribed Cole photographs are especially desirable because they connect the collector directly to one of the defining moments of the Second World War.
