Item Description

This exceptional collectible depicts the mission map used by the Doolittle Raiders during their historic strike against Japan. Adding to its desirability, Cole has personally hand inscribed the photograph "Tokyo Bound, 4-18-42," a highly sought-after mission inscription that commemorates one of the most daring operations of the Second World War.

Richard E. Cole rarely added inscriptions to his signed memorabilia, making examples featuring this detailed mission notation significantly scarcer than standard signatures.

About Richard E. Cole

Lieutenant Colonel Richard E. Cole served as Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot aboard Aircraft No. 1 during the historic Tokyo Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942.

Launching from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet aboard a B-25 Mitchell, Cole participated in the first American air attack against the Japanese home islands following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The mission became one of the defining operations of World War II, inspiring the American public and demonstrating the reach of Allied air power.

Following the war, Cole devoted much of his life to preserving the history of the Doolittle Raiders and ultimately became the last surviving Raider, representing the mission at commemorative events across the country.

Authentic Richard E. Cole autographs remain among the most desirable signatures in World War II aviation collecting.

Historical Significance

The Tokyo Doolittle Raid remains one of the most celebrated missions in military aviation history.

Cole's rare inscription, "Tokyo Bound, 4-18-42," captures the anticipation and determination of the Raiders as they launched toward Japan on a mission that would forever change the course of the Pacific War.

Because Richard Cole rarely added inscriptions, examples featuring this complete mission notation are considerably more desirable than signature-only pieces and are especially prized by advanced Doolittle Raid collectors.
