About Richard E. Cole

Lieutenant Colonel Richard E. Cole served as Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot aboard Aircraft No. 1 during the historic Tokyo Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942.

Launched from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, the sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers carried out the first American air attack against the Japanese home islands following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The daring operation became one of the defining missions of World War II and remains a symbol of American determination and ingenuity.

As Doolittle's trusted co-pilot, Cole played a central role in the mission's success and later became the last surviving Doolittle Raider, dedicating his life to preserving the legacy of the men who participated in the raid.

In 2014, the surviving members of the Doolittle Raiders were collectively awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest civilian honors bestowed by the United States Congress, recognizing their extraordinary service and lasting contribution to American history.

Historical Significance

The Congressional Gold Medal represents one of the highest honors that can be awarded by the United States government.

This photograph celebrates both the historic achievement of the Doolittle Raiders and the national recognition they received decades later for their courage and sacrifice. Richard Cole's signature, executed in brilliant gold paint pen, creates a fitting tribute to the prestigious award and the remarkable men who earned it.

Authentic Cole-signed Congressional Gold Medal photographs remain highly desirable because they commemorate both the historic mission and the enduring legacy of the Doolittle Raiders.
