About Matthew B. Ridgway

General Matthew B. Ridgway (1895-1993) was one of the most influential American military leaders of the twentieth century. A highly decorated United States Army officer, Ridgway commanded airborne forces during World War II, led United Nations forces during the Korean War, and later served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army.

During World War II, Ridgway commanded the famed 82nd Airborne Division, overseeing airborne operations in Sicily, Italy, and Northwest Europe. His leadership helped establish the airborne forces as one of the most effective combat organizations in military history.

Ridgway is perhaps best remembered for his leadership during the Korean War. Assuming command of the Eighth Army during a critical period of the conflict, he revitalized United Nations forces and helped reverse battlefield setbacks. His leadership earned widespread praise and secured his place among America's most respected combat commanders.
