Item Description

Offered is an exceptional first-generation copy of an original July 1945 World War II Individual Flight Record associated with the 509th Composite Group and 393rd Bombardment Squadron, subsequently hand-signed and inscribed by Lee Palmert, Locke Easton, and Franklin B. Wimer.

The military flight record identifies William J. Palmert, a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, and prominently records his organizational assignments with the 20th Air Force, 313th Bombardment Wing, 509th Composite Group, and 393rd Bombardment Squadron.

Dated July 1945, the record documents extensive B-29 Superfortress flight activity during the final weeks preceding the historic atomic bombing missions against Japan.

The first-generation copy was subsequently signed in blue ink by three individuals, including inscriptions identifying:

Lee Palmert - Pilot

Franklin B. Wimer - Nav.

The document also bears the signature of Locke Easton.

The combination of a July 1945 509th Composite Group flight record, extensive B-29 activity, three signatures and inscriptions, and Beckett Authentication Services authentication gives this piece outstanding appeal among collectors of World War II aviation, B-29, 509th Composite Group, and atomic bomb history.

Please note that the underlying document is a first-generation copy of the original wartime flight record and is not being represented as the original World War II document. The signatures and inscriptions were subsequently hand-applied to this first-generation copy.

Please review all photographs carefully as they are considered part of the item description.

About the Document

This Individual Flight Record dates from July 1945, an extraordinarily important period in the history of the 509th Composite Group.

The record identifies William J. Palmert as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and documents organizational assignments including the:

• 20th Air Force
• 313th Bombardment Wing
• 509th Composite Group
• 393rd Bombardment Squadron

The flight log contains numerous entries for the B-29, documenting substantial flying activity throughout July 1945.

The record shows flights on multiple dates during the month and totals approximately 82 hours and 30 minutes of flying time, providing a fascinating snapshot of the intensive B-29 operations taking place during the closing weeks of World War II.

The first-generation copy was later signed and inscribed in blue ink by Lee Palmert, Locke Easton, and Franklin B. Wimer, adding a personal veteran connection to the wartime flight record.

About the 509th Composite Group

The 509th Composite Group was the specialized United States Army Air Forces organization created to conduct atomic bombing operations during World War II.

The unit trained at Wendover Field, Utah, before deploying to the Mariana Islands and operating from Tinian.

The group's aircrews operated specially configured B-29 Superfortress aircraft and underwent highly specialized training for their secret mission.

On August 6, 1945, the Enola Gay, piloted by Paul Tibbets, carried the atomic bomb Little Boy to Hiroshima.

Three days later, on August 9, 1945, Bockscar carried the second atomic bomb mission to Nagasaki.

A July 1945 flight record associated with the 509th is particularly compelling because it dates immediately before these historic missions and documents the B-29 flying activity of personnel assigned to the organization.

Why This Piece Is Special

This piece combines several desirable areas of World War II aviation collecting:

• Three authenticated signatures
• Lee Palmert autograph and Pilot inscription
• Locke Easton autograph
• Franklin B. Wimer autograph and Navigator inscription
• 509th Composite Group
• 393rd Bombardment Squadron
• 313th Bombardment Wing
• 20th Air Force
• B-29 Superfortress
• July 1945 flight activity
• Atomic bomb-era aviation history
• First-generation copy of an original military flight record
• Beckett Authentication Services Letter of Authenticity

Rather than being a modern multi-signed photograph or commemorative item, the three signatures appear on a first-generation copy of an actual July 1945 military flight record associated with the 509th Composite Group.

That direct historical context substantially enhances the piece's appeal.

Collecting 509th Composite Group & B-29 Memorabilia

• Enola Gay
• Bockscar
• The Great Artiste
• Hiroshima
• Nagasaki
• Tinian
• Wendover Field

Display Appeal

This piece offers excellent display appeal.

The prominent INDIVIDUAL FLIGHT RECORD heading, organizational identification for the 20th Air Force, 313th Bombardment Wing, 509th Composite Group, and 393rd Bombardment Squadron, numerous B-29 flight entries, and blue-ink signatures and inscriptions immediately establish its World War II aviation character.

The combination makes it an outstanding addition to a collection focused on the 509th Composite Group, B-29 Superfortress, World War II aviation, Manhattan Project, atomic bomb history, or authenticated veteran autographs.
