About Kenneth Walsh

Major Kenneth Ambrose Walsh (1916-1998) was one of the most celebrated Marine Corps aviators of World War II and one of the leading American fighter aces of the Pacific Theater.

Flying the legendary Vought F4U Corsair, Walsh achieved an extraordinary combat record while serving with Marine Fighting Squadron VMF-124. During intense combat operations over the Solomon Islands, he demonstrated exceptional courage and flying skill while engaging Japanese aircraft in some of the war's fiercest aerial battles.

Walsh was credited with 21 aerial victories, making him one of the highest-scoring Marine Corps aces of World War II. For his heroic actions during combat operations in the Solomon Islands campaign, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States.

His combat achievements helped establish the reputation of both the Marine Corps aviation community and the F4U Corsair as dominant forces in the Pacific air war.

Pilots flying these dangerous missions routinely faced determined enemy opposition, anti-aircraft fire, and long over-water flights. The aerial battles fought over Bougainville and the surrounding islands became some of the most significant fighter engagements of the Pacific War.
