About John Young

John W. Young (1930-2018) was a United States Navy test pilot, NASA astronaut, and one of the most accomplished space explorers in history. During a remarkable career spanning four decades, Young flew aboard Gemini 3, Gemini 10, Apollo 10, Apollo 16, STS-1, and STS-9, becoming the first person to fly six space missions.

In April 1972, Young commanded Apollo 16 and became one of only a select few individuals to walk on the Moon. He later commanded STS-1, the first Space Shuttle mission, helping usher in a new era of human spaceflight. Few astronauts contributed more significantly to the success of America's space program than John Young.
