About John Young

John Young was one of the most accomplished astronauts in the history of the American space program.

During a remarkable career spanning three decades, Young flew six space missions and became the first astronaut to fly aboard four different classes of spacecraft: Gemini, Apollo Command Module, Apollo Lunar Module, and the Space Shuttle.

In April 1972, Young commanded Apollo 16 and became the ninth human being to walk on the Moon. Alongside Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke, Young conducted scientific exploration in the Descartes Highlands while Command Module Pilot Thomas Mattingly remained in lunar orbit.

Young later commanded the first Space Shuttle mission, further cementing his place as one of NASA's most accomplished astronauts.
