About John Cunningham

Air Marshal Sir John "Cat's Eyes" Cunningham (1917-2002) was the Royal Air Force's most successful night fighter pilot of World War II and one of the most respected aviators in British military history.

Flying aircraft such as the Bristol Beaufighter and later the legendary de Havilland Mosquito, Cunningham achieved 20 aerial victories, the majority of them during night combat operations. His remarkable success came during a period when radar-equipped night fighters played a critical role in defending Britain from enemy bombing attacks.

Nicknamed "Cat's Eyes" Cunningham, he became one of the most famous RAF pilots of the war. While the nickname was originally part of a wartime propaganda campaign, Cunningham's true success stemmed from his exceptional flying ability, combat skill, and mastery of the emerging technology that revolutionized aerial warfare.

Following the war, Cunningham continued his distinguished aviation career as a test pilot and senior RAF officer, eventually rising to the rank of Air Marshal.
