About Deke Slayton

Donald "Deke" Slayton (1924-1993) was a United States Air Force pilot, test pilot, NASA astronaut, and one of the legendary Mercury Seven astronauts selected for America's first human spaceflight program. Although a heart condition initially prevented him from flying in the Mercury Program, Slayton became one of the most influential figures in NASA history.

As NASA's Director of Flight Crew Operations, Slayton played a pivotal role in selecting and assigning astronauts to the Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab missions. He ultimately returned to space in 1975 as a crew member of the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first joint space mission between the United States and Soviet Union.
