About David McCampbell

Captain David McCampbell (1910-1996) was the leading fighter ace in the history of the United States Navy and one of the most decorated naval aviators of World War II. Flying the legendary Grumman F6F Hellcat, McCampbell achieved an extraordinary 34 aerial victories, a record that still stands as the highest total by any U.S. Navy pilot.

McCampbell's combat service in the Pacific Theater earned him the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. On October 24, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, he achieved one of the greatest aerial performances in naval aviation history by shooting down nine enemy aircraft during a single mission.

His remarkable combat record, leadership, and courage established him as one of the most celebrated naval aviators of the twentieth century.
