About Bernard Fisher

Colonel Bernard Francis Fisher (1927-2014) was a United States Air Force pilot whose extraordinary courage during the Vietnam War earned him the Medal of Honor, America's highest military decoration.

On March 10, 1966, during intense fighting near A Shau Valley, South Vietnam, Major Fisher flew an A-1E Skyraiderin support of American and South Vietnamese forces under heavy enemy attack. During the battle, fellow pilot Major Dafford "Jump" Myers was shot down and trapped on a battle-damaged airstrip surrounded by enemy forces.

Despite heavy ground fire and the extreme danger of the situation, Fisher voluntarily landed his Skyraider on the damaged runway, taxied to Myers' position, rescued the downed pilot, and successfully took off under enemy fire. His heroic actions saved Myers' life and became one of the most celebrated rescue missions in Air Force history.

For his extraordinary valor, Fisher became one of the first Air Force officers to receive the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War.
