About Alan Shepard

Alan B. Shepard Jr. (1923-1998) was a United States Navy officer, test pilot, NASA astronaut, and one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. On May 5, 1961, Shepard became the first American in space aboard the Freedom 7 mission, helping launch the United States into the Space Race.

After returning to flight status, Shepard commanded Apollo 14 and became the fifth person to walk on the Moon in February 1971. His achievements as a pioneering astronaut and Moonwalker secured his place among the most important figures in the history of human spaceflight.
