About Adolf Galland

General Adolf Galland (1912–1996) was one of Germany's most celebrated fighter pilots during World War II and became one of the highest-ranking combat aviators in the Luftwaffe.

Galland flew combat missions throughout the war, earning 104 confirmed aerial victories, primarily while flying the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and later the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. His exceptional combat record earned him the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, one of Germany's highest military decorations.

Beyond his success as a fighter ace, Galland eventually rose to become General der Jagdflieger (General of Fighters), overseeing Germany's fighter force during some of the most critical periods of the air war over Europe. Late in the war, he commanded the elite JV 44, one of the first operational jet fighter units equipped with the revolutionary Messerschmitt Me 262, the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft.

Following the war, Galland became an aviation consultant and remained an important figure in military aviation history until his passing in 1996.
